The Unminded House

Spam Messages

When I tell you that the oddest things spark my writing muse, I do mean that the oddest things spark my writing muse. The last time I posted here was about one month ago August 27, 2012. Since then, I hadn’t paid much attention to my site because, as promised, I stated I’d no longer post unless I had something of importance to say. Besides, between the children, the husband, the house, the gig, the product making, free time is sparse.

I’ve often planned out in my head that I would come back and finish up a few drafts I seem to never get around to completing, but as soon as I think it, the thought is interrupted by . . . life. Today, I put my foot down on life, because my BlackBerry has been blowing up lately due toooooooo . . . spam messages flooding into my inbox. I wish I could say it was due to something else, especially something that sounds a lot like chi-ching, chi-ching but, nope, these damned spam messages have done everything but taken over my phone. To make matters worse, while I learned a neat little trick to delete them in piles as they arrived on my phone, that did nothing for those piling up in my site’s backend. *weeeedoggie*

Imagine my utter surprise, when I logged in to find 2,866 spam messages waiting on me to trash them. Just little ol’ me. All those spam messages. That’s a lot of damned spam, and WordPress doesn’t make it easy to get rid of them once the problem gets this large, this out of control. So, after spending 20 well-needed minutes of my life deleting all of them and *gasp* finally activating Akismet, a thought crossed my mind. One that led me to the “Add New” post section to pen the thought that follows.

Like anything in life, if it sits unused or underused, something comes along to infiltrate and take over. I see it happening with abandoned houses all the time. I think empty houses send out a distress signal to the nearest squatter, because I’ve seen them find houses tucked away in neighborhoods that nobody, with the exception of the owners, knew was empty.

Depending on the circumstances, not everything that takes over can be as easily removed as 2,866 spam messages—because I know from observation that it isn’t always easy to remove squatters. Just as it isn’t always easy to remove misinformation and disinformation from the mind.

How’s that for house-cluttering on a virtual, physical and mental plane meeting up and becoming part of the same inspirational message? Ha! Anywho, the meat of what I’m saying here is don’t mind the house—the mind—and others can clutter it with anything they want at any time, because an unminded house becomes fair game.

It took me 2,866 spam messages to spark such a reminder. Courtesy of my unminded virtual house, you get to receive the same reminder in 334 455 485 486 words.
